There a bunch of new books that have hit the shelves by Native authors. The project includes an accurate telling of "The Plymouth Thanksgiving Story" along with study and discussion questions, ideas for enrichment, art projects, and authentic recipes—all intended to enable teachers to accurately portray the events surrounding the first Thanksgiving. This is a good start, and certainly some of these books are important. The timeline is relative.

I also grew up buying into the whole kumbaya story about the Natives and the Pilgrims, and making “Indian headdresses” for Thanksgiving crafts; it’s not always easy to totally shift both perspectives and traditions at once.
